The Data Scientist will play a pivotal role within the Co-operative Bank of Kenya by applying advanced analytics, machine learning, and statistical modelling to deliver actionable insights and high-impact analytical solutions. Reporting to the Head – Business Intelligence, the role focuses on building predictive models, performing exploratory data analysis, transforming complex datasets, and developing value-added analytical systems that support revenue growth, risk management, operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and strategic decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Perform statistical analysis and deploy machine learning models on large datasets.
Conduct exploratory data analysis to discover patterns, trends, and insights.
Source, design, develop, and implement predictive models using machine learning and AI algorithms.
Evaluate deployed models and publish monthly performance metrics.
Transform large and complex datasets into actionable insights through ad-hoc analysis and visualization using dashboards, reports, and charts.
Engineer meaningful features that enhance model performance and improve predictive accuracy.
Implement analytical models, review data structures, and ensure optimal dataset construction in collaboration with Data Engineers and BI Developers.
Select features, build and optimize classifiers, and apply data mining techniques using bank-approved tools.
Enhance data collection procedures, ensure data integrity, and implement automated anomaly detection systems.
Improve foundational data procedures, guidelines, and standards, while promoting best practices for data management, reporting, and security.
Apply statistical data quality procedures and test-driven approaches to ensure accuracy and optimize model performance.
Design, build, and maintain components of the data warehouse, including data modeling, metric definitions, and data visualization structures.
Process raw, unstructured data at scale and consolidate it into the data warehouse for BI and advanced analytics.
Evaluate datasets for quality and resolve issues using statistical quality procedures and software tools.
Assist BI analysts in analyzing business requirements, defining data models, validating information, and supporting insight generation.
Provide test interfaces for UAT and conduct user training to support interpretation of BI and analytical solutions.
Develop and maintain documentation on models, reports, and statistical solutions.
Support continuous improvement initiatives by evaluating existing BI tools, systems, and processes and implementing high-impact enhancements.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, or related quantitative fields.
3–5 years of experience as a Data Scientist or in applied data analytics roles.
Experience with relational databases such as Oracle, SQL queries, and OLAP cubes.
Strong understanding of machine learning algorithms (k-NN, Naive Bayes, SVM, Decision Forests, etc.).
Proficiency with data science toolkits such as R, Weka, NumPy, MATLAB, and similar tools.
Strong command of SQL, Hive, Pig, and experience with NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Cassandra, HBase).
Strong applied statistics skills including distributions, regression, and hypothesis testing.
Good scripting and programming experience.
Knowledge of agile methodologies and performance metric tools.
Experience extracting and cleaning text from formats such as HTML and PDF.
Strong collaboration, interpersonal, and teamwork skills with the ability to build effective cross-functional relationships.
Solid coordination and project management abilities to support complex analytical initiatives.
