Zizi Afrique Foundation is seeking a Kenyan-based qualitative researcher to conduct a scoping study on a community childcare model for children aged 0 to 3 years under the ECD Mapema Initiative. The consultancy focuses on identifying scalable, community-rooted childcare models that support nurturing care, promote holistic child development, and enable school re-entry for adolescent mothers, particularly in marginalized and Arid and Semi Arid Lands contexts, with priority in Samburu County.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and submit an inception report outlining the study approach, methodology, work plan, tools, schedule, and proposed report structure.
Conduct a comprehensive desk review of existing childcare policies, models, and gaps, with emphasis on adolescent mothers, gender equality, and access in ASAL communities and sub Saharan Africa.
Design research tools and collect data on caregiving practices, community childcare models, and adolescent mother-centered interventions, leveraging community learning from Samburu County.
Assess model outcomes, scalability, contextual relevance, costs, feasibility for county adoption, and potential to promote holistic development and school re-entry of adolescent mothers.
Facilitate a stakeholder validation workshop with Samburu County Government, community representatives, and partners to review findings and co-create contextualized models.
Develop a contextualization framework and pilot implementation plan for adaptation in Samburu and similar counties.
Submit a comprehensive final report, executive summary, policy brief, and practical implementation plan.
Objectives
Examine how childcare challenges among adolescent mothers influence gender equality in Samburu County.
Identify gaps in existing childcare models for adolescent mothers.
Map and synthesize promising caregiving models that support nurturing care for children aged 0 to 3 years.
Provide strategic recommendations for policymakers and stakeholders in the Early Childhood Development 0 to 3 space.
Support co-creation of contextually relevant childcare models for marginalized communities.
Qualifications
Master’s degree or higher in Gender, Education, Early Childhood Development, Development Studies, Sociology, or a related field.
Demonstrated experience in scoping assessments related to nurturing care, Early Childhood Development, and gender.
Strong mixed methods research skills, with solid quantitative competence.
Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and producing policy and practice-oriented reports.
Proven ability to conduct feasibility or scoping studies in marginalized contexts.
Duration
The consultancy will run for approximately five months, from mid February 2026 to July 2026.
