The "Mama Shamba Maisha" project is a five-year research initiative spearheaded by the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). The study aims to assess the impact of an innovative agricultural intervention on the health of pregnant women, pregnancy outcomes, and infant health. Women will be enrolled during early pregnancy and followed through to the first year postpartum, with a variety of health outcome measures collected.
Position: Farm Trainers (4 Positions)
Job Grade: KMR 10
Location: Migori County
Reporting to: Agricultural Trainer
Key Responsibilities
Conduct both group and individual agricultural training sessions for study participants.
Develop and maintain the "Mama Shamba Maisha" model farm.
Set up demonstration plots within the farm for hands-on learning.
Track and document the farm’s productivity and keep clear records.
Offer continuous support through farm-based discussions with participants.
Ensure the adoption of best farming practices and sustainability strategies.
Build relationships with farmers, community leaders, and agricultural extension officers.
Assist the Agricultural Training Coordinator with agricultural input distribution.
Keep daily documentation of farming training activities and provide timely reports to the study team.
Perform additional duties as assigned by the study leadership.
Qualifications and Experience
Minimum of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or its equivalent.
At least 4 years of practical farming or agricultural extension experience, preferably with rural farmers.
Basic knowledge of farming techniques, soil and water conservation, and pest management.
Ability to communicate agricultural concepts simply, engagingly, and culturally appropriately.
Certification in general agriculture or equivalent agricultural/community training experience.
Experience working with smallholder farmers, women’s groups, or youth in agriculture is a plus.
Proficiency in local languages is an advantage.
Residence in Migori County (Rongo or Suna East/West subcounties) for the duration of the study.
Desirable Qualities
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to engage with people from diverse backgrounds and literacy levels.
Passion for agriculture, particularly vegetable production.
Terms of Employment
The position offers a one-year contract, renewable subject to funding availability, with a 3-month probation period.
Salary negotiable based on education, experience, and demonstrated competency within KEMRI's service scheme.
