The Android Developer will design, build, and maintain high-quality mobile applications within the Co-operative Bank of Kenya’s Digital Products and Innovation Factory. The role focuses on delivering seamless, user-centered Android experiences while maintaining strong engineering standards, supporting agile development, and driving continuous improvement across digital products.
Key Responsibilities
Develop, test, and maintain Android applications using Kotlin, Java, and Android SDK.
Translate UI/UX designs into responsive, production-ready mobile interfaces.
Integrate mobile applications with backend services using REST APIs and modern integration patterns.
Write clean, testable, and well-documented code following SOLID principles and industry standards.
Conduct peer code reviews and enforce quality, performance, and security best practices.
Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve crashes, bugs, and performance bottlenecks.
Implement unit, integration, and UI tests using modern Android testing frameworks.
Optimize applications for memory usage, performance, offline capabilities, and battery consumption.
Manage application releases through Google Play Console, including testing, rollout, and monitoring.
Stay updated with emerging Android technologies, tools, and best practices.
Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, QA, and backend teams throughout the development lifecycle.
Maintain accurate technical documentation and actively contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
Minimum of three (3) years’ hands-on Android development experience.
Expertise in Kotlin, Java, Android Studio, and Android SDK.
Strong knowledge of Jetpack components, Retrofit, Room, Dagger/Hilt, Coroutines, and Material Design.
Experience with Gradle, Firebase Cloud Messaging, push notifications, and app analytics.
Understanding of MVP, MVVM, and Clean Architecture patterns.
Hands-on experience with Android testing tools such as JUnit, Espresso, and Mockito.
Proven experience integrating applications with RESTful APIs.
Strong understanding of mobile application security best practices.
Experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and DevSecOps-aligned workflows.
Prior experience publishing at least one Android application is an added advantage.
Demonstrated experience working within agile development environments.
Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical concepts to diverse audiences.
