The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is a state corporation established under the Science and Technology (Amendment) Act of 1979, which was later amended to the Science, Technology, and Innovation Act in 2013. It serves as the national body responsible for conducting health research in Kenya. Over the past 40 years, KEMRI has evolved from its modest beginnings to become a regional leader in human health research. Today, the Institute is recognized as one of the leading centers of excellence in health research, both in Africa and globally.
Key Responsibilities
Perform study-specific assays accurately and on time.
Ensure proper custody, storage, and archival of participant specimens.
Report abnormal lab results promptly and communicate with the study clinicians/coordinator.
Maintain and troubleshoot lab equipment, reporting issues to the lab manager.
Run and log specimen controls according to the standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Develop lab-related SOPs for the studies.
Ensure proper segregation and management of laboratory waste.
Develop and update the laboratory inventory.
Review and ensure compliance with lab SOPs and specimen flow charts, in alignment with the study protocol and applicable ISO-certification.
Project the need for consumables and reagents, reorder when necessary, and ensure their proper custody.
Participate in sample shipment procedures per IATA guidelines and track referred samples.
Update and maintain the lab specimen database, ensuring quality assurance.
Ensure compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP).
Receive, download, transcribe, and report all lab results according to the lab results communication SOP.
Assist with participant recruitment and consenting when required.
Support activities for other studies as directed by the Lab management team.
Vacancy Requirements
Note: All the listed requirements are mandatory.
A degree in a biomedical science or lab-related field
Current registration with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB)
GCP certification
At least 1 year of experience working in a busy clinical research lab
Experience with rapid HIV and pregnancy testing
Strong commitment to integrity and high-quality performance
Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team
Attention to detail
Ability to follow instructions and procedures
Proficiency in verbal and written communication in both English and Swahili
Experience in processing genital samples for research purposes
Experience preparing samples for Nugent scoring is an advantage
Computer literacy
Familiarity with processing samples for shipment; IATA certification is an advantage
Experience with electronic data collection tools, particularly REDCap
Flexible and willing to work during odd hours
GCLP certification
